How TrueSquare works: booking a framer in 3 easy steps

Finding a good picture framer has always been harder than it should be. The high street options range from excellent to frankly indifferent, and telling the difference from the outside — before you have handed over something you care about — is genuinely difficult. Online search throws up a mix of chain stores, semi-retired hobbyists, and serious craftspeople, all presenting themselves in roughly the same way.

TrueSquare was built to solve that problem. We do the verification work so that everyone on the platform has already been assessed for quality, professionalism, and expertise. When you browse TrueSquare, you are not starting from zero — you are choosing from a curated group of people whose work we have seen firsthand.

Why TrueSquare exists

The framing industry in the UK is full of talented craftspeople who are not particularly easy to find. Many work from studios or workshops rather than high-street shops, do not advertise heavily, and rely on word of mouth. That system works well for people who already know someone — but it leaves a lot of people with genuinely good artwork having it framed by whoever came up first in Google.

At the same time, there are framers who charge premium prices for mediocre work, using standard materials while advertising conservation quality. Without expertise, it is hard to tell the difference before the job is done.

TrueSquare brings transparency to both sides: you can see exactly who is framing your work, review their portfolio and client feedback before booking, and compare their specialisms and locations to find the right fit for your particular piece.

Step 1: Choose your service

The booking process begins with a service selection. This is not just a filter — it genuinely helps us route you to the right people.

The main categories are:

  • Picture framing: Standard and bespoke framing for prints, photographs, drawings, and paintings.
  • Canvas stretching: Mounting canvases onto stretcher bars, re-stretching, and conservation stretching.
  • Conservation framing: Archival-quality framing for valuable, fragile, or irreplaceable items.
  • Memorabilia framing: Football shirts, sports jerseys, signed items, shadow boxes.
  • Bespoke framing: Custom-made frames, unusual sizes, specialist finishes.

If you are not sure which category applies to your piece, book under the closest option and mention the specifics in your notes. Every framer on TrueSquare can advise on the right approach once they know more about your particular item.

Step 2: Browse framers

Once you have indicated what you need, you will see profiles for framers who specialise in that work. Each profile includes:

  • A portfolio of recent work — photographs of finished frames and canvases from real jobs
  • A list of specialisms, so you can see at a glance whether someone focuses on conservation, bespoke work, memorabilia, or all three
  • Their location and the areas they serve — useful if you need collection and delivery
  • Their rating and client reviews — honest feedback from previous customers about quality, communication, and turnaround

Take the time to look at portfolios properly. Portfolio quality is the single most reliable indicator of finished quality. Look at the corners — are they crisp and clean? Look at the mounts — are the cuts straight and the reveals even? Look at the overall presentation — does it look careful and considered?

Step 3: Book your appointment

Booking is straightforward: choose a date and time from the framer's availability calendar, enter your contact details, and confirm. You will receive an email confirmation with the appointment details and the framer's contact information.

At this stage it is useful to include a brief description of what you need in the notes field. Something like "A3 watercolour, original, looking for conservation framing, budget around £200" gives the framer useful context and means you can have a more productive conversation at the appointment.

The initial appointment is a consultation — the framer will look at your piece, discuss options and materials, and provide a quote. You are not committing to anything beyond that meeting at the booking stage. Most framers are happy to hold your piece for a day or two if you want to think about the quote before confirming.

How we verify framers

Every framer who joins TrueSquare goes through an assessment process before their profile goes live. This involves reviewing examples of their work, checking their experience and professional background, and verifying that their studio or workshop is set up to handle artwork safely.

We look specifically for: evidence of correct material handling, familiarity with conservation standards (even if they do not specialise in conservation work), clean workshop practice, and the ability to handle a range of sizes and types. We also carry out reference checks where possible.

This is not a guarantee of perfection — no screening process is — but it does mean that every framer on the platform has met a minimum standard of quality and professionalism that you would not know was there if you were searching independently.

After your booking

Once you have confirmed a job with a framer, they will typically give you a timescale at the consultation. Standard framing usually takes one to two weeks from the deposit payment. Conservation work and bespoke frames may take longer — three to five weeks for complex pieces is not unusual.

You can contact your framer directly through TrueSquare at any point during the process if you have questions. When your piece is ready, either collection or delivery can be arranged depending on the framer's services and your preferences.

If there is ever a problem with the finished work — and in our experience it is rare but not unheard of — the TrueSquare team is here to help facilitate a resolution. We take quality seriously on both sides of the platform.
